Medtech company Masimo said it has been awarded $634 million in damages by U.S. District Court for the Central District of California as part of its patent infringement lawsuit against Apple.

“We are pleased by this outcome, and appreciate the time and attention given to our case by the court and the jury. This is a significant win in our ongoing efforts to protect our innovations and intellectual property, which is crucial to our ability to develop technology that benefits patients. We remain committed to defending our IP rights moving forward," the company said in a statement.

The patent suit can be traced by to health monitoring technology that Apple embedded into its Apple Watch devices.

According to Masimo, Apple first released its pulse oximeter sensor with the Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020 and continues to use it in the current Apple Watches. In 2023, a U.S. judge ruled that Apple had indeed used Masimo's light-based technology in its wearable technology without proper permission.

That decision came after Apple had filed a lawsuit accusing Masimo of infringing on Apple Watch patents in the design of its W1 smartwatches.
