Last Friday, Owens Corning announced that it has selected Prattville, Alabama, as the location for its new shingle plant to serve the southeastern U.S.

The Prattville facility will span 250,000 square feet and operate a four-wide laminator capable of producing some six million squares of laminate shingles per year.

A laminate shingle square is a standard measurement in the roofing industry. It is the amount of material needed to cover 100 square feet of roof area. Laminate shingles are asphalt shingles that use two or more layers of material bonded together to create a three-dimensional, textured appearance and are more durable than standard three-tab shingles.

According to roofing supply company ABC Supply, asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material used in the Southeast United States due to their ability to stand up to seasonal weather swings. Metal roofs are also becoming more popular in the area due to their ability to survive severe weather.

Construction on the plant is scheduled to start early next year, with production coming online in 2027. The facility will create nearly 100 jobs.

The project is supported by a $4.9 million investment from the Growing Alabama program to speed up improvements at the site in Prattville's South Industrial Park. The state's primary workforce development agency, AIDT, will also provide services valued at $885,000.

According to Nico Del Monaco, Owens Corning roofing president, the new facility will service the company's growing contractor network.

Founded in 1938 and based in Toledo, Ohio, Owens Corning posted 2024 sales of $11 billion. Following the completion of the Prattville facility, the company's roofing business will operate 17 asphalt roofing and components plants in the U.S. The company has more than 25,000 employees in 31 countries.
