Cyber criminals frequently rely on internet-connected devices to launch cyber attacks or otherwise exploit computer networks, the FBI warned this month.

The bureau issued a public service announcement regarding the appeal of smart devices, from routers and wireless radio links to DVRs or smart garage door openers, to “cyber actors.” The agency said IoT proxy servers transmit all internet requests through the device’s IP address, which provides “a layer of anonymity” to hackers.

The announcement added that attackers often target devices with weak authentication or software vulnerabilities. Once accessed, the devices can be used to spend spam emails, engage in click-fraud activities or test stolen information from other data breaches.

“Devices in developed nations are particularly attractive targets because they allow access to many business websites that block traffic from suspicious or foreign IP addresses,” the PSA continued.

The agency urged consumers to reboot their devices regularly, ensure security measures are up-to-date and isolate those devices from other network connections.
