Mazda Motor Corporation announced plans to install solar power generation equipment at its Miyoshi Plant and Mazda KD Center in Japan. The development aligns with the automaker's goal of achieving carbon neutrality at its global manufacturing facilities by 2035.

The company will expand the use of on-site power purchase agreements to the Mazda KD Center, scheduled for completion in November, and to the Miyoshi Plant, which includes an battery energy storage system. ORIX Corporation (ORIX) will install solar power generation equipment as the PPA provider.

Overview of On-Site PPA

FacilityMazda KD CenterMiyoshi Plant
Solar Panel Capacity2.2MW0.8MW
Estimated First-Year Power Generation2.6GWh0.9GWh
Scheduled Start of Power SupplyNovember 2026December 2026

At the Miyoshi Plant, the generated electricity will be consumed on-site, with any excess solar power placed in a battery energy storage system that uses new automotive lithium-ion batteries. This will allow Mazda to utilize surplus solar power and reduce peak electricity demand. At the Mazda KD Center, steel sheet product manufacturer Toyo Kohan Co. will utilize the environmental value associated with surplus electricity.

Mazda aims to contribute to the region’s sustainable development and enhancement of the industrial competitiveness by working with its partners to demonstrate and implement a range of carbon-neutral technologies, drawing on their respective strengths. The automaker also plans to collaborate with like-minded partner companies to advance initiatives toward carbon neutrality, including expanding the use of renewable energy.
