Optical and photonic technologies company Lumentum Holdings Inc. announced plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The factory will produce advanced indium phosphide (InP)-based optical products, including continuous wave (CW) and ultra-high-power (UHP) lasers, that serve as critical components in the world’s largest AI data centers.

Lumentum expects the new facility to expand its manufacturing capacity, leveraging 6-inch InP wafers. The company added that it plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars over the next several years to scale production, while preserving and creating over 400 manufacturing jobs.

Lumentum acquired the 240,000-square-foot facility from semiconductor chipmaker Qorvo. The purchase agreement includes the transfer of an experienced workforce. Customers of the site will include Nvidia and other AI infrastructure firms.

New roles at the factory will include fabrication process and equipment engineering, manufacturing technicians, operations, supply chain, quality, management, IT, HR and finance.

The project received support from state and local economic development programs.
