Amazon Gets $4.5M from Delaware

The e-commerce giant plans a warehouse at the site of a former GM plant.

On Monday, Delaware officials approved $4.5 million in incentives for Amazon.

The retailer plans to build a five-story, 3.8 million-square-foot distribution facility in Newport. Amazon needs to create 1,000 full-time jobs in the first three years to receive $3 million in incentives.

Amazon plans to invest $50 million in new equipment and machinery and hire 50 managers averaging $60,000 salaries. The other 950 jobs will be paid $15 or $15.86 per hour.

According to the AP, Amazon made $11.6 billion in profit in 2019.

The site has been vacant since GM closed an assembly plant in 2009.
