An airport that’s been sitting vacant for more than 20 years will soon find new life as a cannabis grow facility.
The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) has received approval of its plans for the former Marquette County Airport in Michigan.
The KBIC has two phases planned for redeveloping the 40,000-square-foot space.
It will initially use 10,000 square feet of grow space on the first floor before eventually reinvesting to create another 20,000 square feet for growing.
The KBIC also plans to use 20 acres surrounding the airport for greenhouses to grow cannabis during warmer months.
According to WLUC, the KBIC said the site will eventually grow “the most potent strain of marijuana in Michigan.”
KBIC Community Director of Cannabis Development Gary Loonsfoot Jr. said operations should begin in 2023.
